"The Color Purple," starring North Carolina native Fantasia Barrino, premieres on Christmas Day.

Saturday in Charlotte, the Golden Globe nominee attended the film's screening, and WCNC Charlotte had the opportunity to speak with the actress.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina: "The Color Purple," which stars Fantasia Barrino, a native of North Carolina and a Golden Globe nominee, is released on Christmas Day. 

The musical drama serves as an adaptation of the Alice Walker-authored Broadway musical and novel of the same name. 

Prominent actors such as Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, David Allan Grier, and Whoopi Goldberg even make an appearance.

.Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the 1985 adaptation of the film, are producers.

.Barrino is cast as Celie in the relaunch.

Fantasia reprised the role of Celie in the Broadway production of the musical from 2005 to 2008, a period that coincided with her "American Idol" victory in 2003.

Barrino, in company with other actors, attended the film's screening at the Regal Stonecrest at Piper Glen on Saturday.
