Outlander creative details how Tobias Menzies won Captain Black Jack role

Captain Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall (portrayed by Tobias Menzies) may have died on the battlefield at Culloden, but he remains one of Outlander's most iconic and vicious villains.

His ruthlessness had no bounds and was a dramatic contrast to his amiable, twentieth-century historian descendant

Frank Randall (also Menzies), who was Claire Fraser's (Caitrona Balfe) first husband.

While many may believe it would have been difficult to find a single actor to play such distinct personalities,

Outlander's casting director Suzanne Smith recently stated that the way became absolutely very real.

Jamie Fraser and has been a part of the series since its creation - shed light on bringing Menzies on board.

The Starz collection was constantly looking for a single actor to play both roles - in Diana Gabaldon's novels

Claire is initially distressed while passing over the stones and mistakes Black Jack for her husband Frank in length attire.
