‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Opens Record, Best For Lionsgate In Pandemic Era $73M+Sunday Box Office

John Wick: Chapter 4 opens for $25.8M, a -12% drop from Friday/previews to Saturday like Chapter 3. The updated franchise and Lionsgate pandemic record opening is $73.5M.

We always knew $137.5M would be a franchise best for worldwide launch. The Keanu Reeves film launched at No. 1 in all 71 markets this weekend. The picture grossed $64M internationally, beating pre-release projections.

Reeves's second-biggest live-action beginning behind Matrix Reloaded's $91.7M domestically and Matrix Revolutions' $201.4M global start are possibly his best.Only nine films in the past 40 years have set a franchise record with their fourth installment, including John Wick.

Only five of those nine franchises have done what John Wick has done by building to four pictures with each new installment better than the last.

John Wick: Chapter 4 had the largest R-rated opening post-pandemic, surpassing Halloween Kills' $49.4M (which was hurt by a theatrical day-and-date release on Peacock).

After Disney/Marvel Studio's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106.1M), John Wick: Chapter 4 had the second-best domestic opening of 2023.

This is Reeves' farewell song in the core franchise, and the fourthquel opened to more than No Time to Die ($55.2M) in the U.S./Canada. EntTelligence reports 5M moviegoers for the fourthquel this weekend, compared to 7M for Quantumania.

Typical for this R-rated sequel, matinees are steady and 8PM is great. Fourteen percent arrived before 1PM yesterday, 30% between 1P-5PM, 31% between 5PM and 8PM, and 25% after 8PM. Compared to Scream VI, 33% of admissions occurred after 8PM.
