Erik ten Hag was thanked by Scott McTominay for selecting him to start as Manchester United's substitute captain against Liverpool on Sunday.

When Bruno Fernandes, the club captain, received his fifth yellow card of the season against Bournemouth and was suspended for the match against Liverpool

Erik ten Hag named Scott McTominay as the substitute captain for Sunday's Premier League game.

The Scottish midfielder said that captaining the Red Devils was the greatest honor of his football career and he was grateful to his coach for that.

The 27-year-old said, "Captaining this football club is the biggest honour of my career," in an interview with reporters.

I’ve been a young boy and come through the system here, and it’s one of the biggest honours of my career.

Despite heading into the match as underdogs, a resolute United managed to hold a high-flying Reds to a goalless draw at Anfield.

The result greatly benefited Arsenal who climbed back to the top of the table after their 2-0 win over Brighton earlier that day.

The draw against their arch-rivals will surely boost the confidence of Ten Hag's side who will now aim to pick up a win on Saturday
